Lake Constance ( Bodensee) – a region ideally suited for a great holiday in one of many holiday homes or hotels
A shimmering expanse of water stretches into the distance at the foot of the Alps. The Rhine has its source here nestled between the different greens of meadows, flowers and fruit trees. Lake Constance is so large that it is also named the Suabian Sea ( schwäbisches Meer). It belongs to three countries, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. The water is exteremely clean due to the fact that the lake is fed by several rivers. A holiday on the banks of the lake itself is great but the region has a lot more to offer. Anyone looking for accommodation has no problem whatsoever finding something suitable as there are so many hotels, guest-houses and holiday homes happy to have guests.
The whole area profits from the friendly climate. There are numerous different plants from different part of the earth to be admired on the island Mainau which is definitely worth seeing. In Unteruhldigen visitor can see the remains of a Bronze Age Settlement built on stilts. Later settlers lived in Burg Meersburg, Germany´s oldest inhabited castle built in such a unique location, with the Alps as background to the scenery of the lake itself.
The Zeppelinmuseum in Friedrichshafen allows visitors to admire this impressive airship and afterwards enjoy a drink in a cosy café. If possible tourists should take part in a boat-trip on the lake. The view from the water shows a different aspect of the beauty of the region. It´s no problem to find a boat because there are plenty od different routes on the lake, most of the larger towns are connected to a route either by sailing boat or the faster catamarans.
Perhaps the route takes you to Lindau where the harbor is one of the most attractive on Lake Constance. Of course there are plenty of places to stay here too. You can wander through the narrow little streets and sit on the banks of the lake in the evening, very romantic. And if the weather is wet Sealife in Konstanz is worth visiting to have a look at fascinating marine creatures and the lively town itself is full of things to do and see.
If the weather is good a trip with the cable railway above Bregenz gives you the chance to enjoy a fantastic view over the lake to the peaks of the Alps. You should not miss the opportunity to go to Salem Castle for an exhibition spanning 900 years of viniculture, history and art. The grounds are so large, it takes time to get round and see everything, 200 apes live next door and its entertaing to watch their antics. More active tourists can enjoy themselves here. Whether you want to climb, ramble, ride a mountainbike, play golf, sail or paddle a canoo, it´s all there on offer and is especially attractive because of the beautiful countryside and fresh air. In the spas you can do something for your health and simply relax. Further out in the open county many farms and privat houses rent out rooms or holiday homes to people who want to go back to nature. Gourmets have a lovely time on the lake. They can spoil themselves with dishes from all three countries bordering on the lake. Of course fish is a great delicacy.
